534m7: Long drum

Description

The long drum classification is used for all types of drums which are elongated. The simplest form, which is found in Africa, is a length of a hollow tree trunk with a single skin head. There is a group of long drums from Papua New Guinea which have characteristic handles carved from the side of the wooden body. The shapes may be cylindrical, conical, hourglass, or goblet. Use this classification when length is the primary feature.
