    To recognize all the symbols of an alphabetic or syllabic writing system or a limited number of high-frequency characters in a character system

Strategies
 

Here are some orthography strategies for Stage 1 guidelines for reading:

 
  • Memory

    Associate the written form of familiar words with the picture. Choose words you are learning to recognize in listening comprehension, and ask the language associate (LA) to dictate them to you, or to show pictures and name the words so you can write them.

  • Association

    Label objects around the house in the new language.
