Objectives
 

Here are some vocabulary objectives for Stage 2 for reading:

 
  • To broaden vocabulary to enable you to read about most concrete, everyday topics
  • To learn abstract vocabulary at the end of this stage
Strategies
 

Here are some vocabulary strategies for Stage 2 guidelines for reading:

 
  • Advance organization

    Look for the theme or topic of any story or article you read. Look for an outline. Often, just knowing the topic is a big help.

  • Inference

    Read texts for meaning and mark the words you cannot understand from the context. Later, ask a language associate (LA) to explain words you did not understand in the target language.

    Tip:

    If you need to look up many words or ask about so many words that you cannot follow the story, the passage is too difficult for you. Look for something easier.

  • Analysis and comparison

    Look for families of related words and words that occur in the same contexts.
