Developing primers

by Carole P. Spaeth (compiler)

Introduction

Many instructional programs use primers to teach the lessons. Other programs rely on materials that are generated by the learners at the time the lesson is being taught. A primer is a tool to give structure and organization to the order and method for teaching what is necessary for a person to become literate. However, there is a loss of flexibility in designing lessons to meet specific learner needs when a pre-designed primer is used. This is one reason why primers should not be the sole resource used in literacy instruction, but need to be supplemented with other materials, such as listening stories, teaching aids, etc.

Note:

Information about developing primers for other instructional programs will be included in future versions of the Literacy bookshelf.

Prerequisites

Here are some prerequisites for developing primers:

  • You need to have a thorough understanding of the methods and rationale of the instructional program you have chosen.
  • You need to have a group of local people with whom you will work in developing the primer.
Alternatives
