Facilitating a lesson in a REFLECT instructional program

A REFLECT lesson combines literacy and empowerment

• by discussing topics chosen by the learners, and
• by the learners producing written texts that are meaningful to them in their own context.

Through discussing various issues or problems, participants find solutions which will stimulate them to action.

Here are some prerequisites for facilitating a lesson in the REFLECT instructional program: instructional program:

• You need to complete the background research.
• You need to form a core planning team.
• You need to prepare a facilitator's manual.
• You need to prepare basic materials, such as visual cards.
• You need to select facilitators.
• You need to conduct a facilitators' workshop.
• You need to have a preliteracy campaign.
• You need to start up literacy circles.

1. Choose a topic for discussion.
2. Draw a graphic on the ground using locally available materials.
3. Discuss the topic as the graphic is being drawn.
4. Transfer the graphic representation to a large piece of paper. Participants may also draw on small cards.
5. Have the participants choose a word from the labels on the map or calendar, or whatever was drawn in Step 2.
6. Break the word into syllables, then build it up again.

1. Choose words for each graphic.
2. Note phrases that are discussed and write on sheets later to form a text. Participants can write these texts in their exercise books.
3. Have participants work in pairs or small groups rather than a large group.
4. Use the graphics for numeracy lessons.
