How to use a cloze procedure for reviewing spelling

Introduction

The cloze procedure is a good tool for helping learners review spelling words. Besides providing a place for learners to write the words, it provides a context for the spelling words.

Materials

Here are the materials needed for using a cloze procedure to review spelling:

  • A list of spelling words
  • A prepared cloze text which is a page of sentences using the spelling words, with each spelling word replaced with an underlined blank space.

See: How to prepare texts for a cloze procedure

Steps
Here are the steps to follow to use a cloze procedure for spelling:

  1. Give the learners the list of spelling words to study ahead of time.
  2. Give the learners the prepared cloze text described in Materials .
  3. Instruct the learners to fill in the blanks with the appropriate spelling words.

If learners cannot supply a word based on the text, tell them the word and have the them fill in the blank.

  4. Read each sentence and write the spelling words on the chalkboard.
  5. Have learners check their sentences and spelling.
