How to use the pagination diagram system

Introduction

Arranging the pages of a center-bound book can be quite complicated. This pagination diagram system may be helpful. It is a graphic way to help you determine how to arrange and print the pages of the book.

Guidelines

Here are some guidelines to follow when you use the pagination diagram system:

  • Make a dummy book before you try this diagram system. Use it to make sure you understand the system. The results of both procedures should be the same.
  • Do not consider the book cover unless it will be printed on the same paper as the book pages.
Steps Example ; Example
Follow these steps to use the pagination diagram system:

  1. Determine the number of pages the book will have.

Assume for this module that it will have 8 pages on 2 pieces of paper.

  2. Draw a diagram of the pages, both front and back.

  3. Number the pages down the line in a zigzag fashion and then back up the line in a reverse zigzag fashion.
    Caution:
    • Pages on the left are always even numbers and pages on the right are odd numbers.
    • The finished pages may not be numbered exactly like the diagram, but the numbers will correspond to "first page, second page", and so on.

  4. Write the names of special pages ( front and back matter ) on the diagram. These pages may not have page numbers in the finished book, but accounting for them on the diagram will help you to visualize the correct pagination.

  5. Adjust the page numbers if you plan to start numbering, for example, on the first page of text, after the front and back matter pages.

  6. Now use this drawing to see in what order the pages should be laid out and which ones go back to back.
