Planning logistics for literacy classes

by Carole Spaeth (compiler)

Introduction

You need to consider many different factors as you organize your literacy classes. This planning should always be done in cooperation with local community leaders.

Prerequisites

Here are some prerequisites for planning logistics for literacy classes:

  • You need to identify the target group.
  • You need to have a thorough understanding of local restraints on times, locations, participants, teachers and other related areas.
Things to do
Here are the things to do when you plan logistics for literacy classes:

  • Determine if the local community will be supportive of the literacy classes.
  • Establish a committee or local group to follow through with plans.
  • Decide the seasons and times that will best suit the specific group you will teach.
  • Consider physical needs such as adequate lighting and seating, and determine how those needs will be met.
  • Identify or build a suitable shelter or building in which the classes can be held.

In choosing a location(s), consider factors such as noise, traffic patterns, and accessibility.
