The materials testing process

by Leah B. Walter (compiler)

Introduction

Literacy materials can never be considered finished products. They need continual informal assessment and periodic formal assessment to assure that they are still appropriate and effective. They must be revised as needed so they continue to produce the desired results in a literacy program.

Stages

You should test and revise literacy materials at several stages in their development and use.

  During preparation ( formative evaluation)
  • Check the product carefully at each stage of production.
  During pilot testing
  • Test, evaluate, revise, retest, and revise trial copies as necessary before printing the finished product.
  During use in a program
  • Continue to test the product as it is used.
  After use (summative evaluation)
  • Evaluate test results and revise if necessary before using the product again.
