Costing awards and performance bonuses

 

Introduction
 

Awards and performance bonuses are motivational devices for increasing participation in a program and rewarding good performance. Many programs have used awards and bonuses to good advantage.

Cost factors
 

Here are some cost factors for awards and bonuses:

 
  • Awards that may be given to students for

    • passing tests
    • regular attendance
    • completing X lessons
    • good citizenship
    • outstanding performance, or
    • completing the course or training.
  • Awards that may be given to teachers for

    • high performance levels of their students
    • teaching all lessons
    • maintaining regular attendance
    • service to the community, or
    • years of service completed.
  • Awards that may be given to supervisors and other staff for

    • faithful service
    • years of service, or
    • outstanding performance.
Things to do
  Here are some things to do to cost awards and performance bonuses:
 
  • Identify the points at which such awards are to be granted.
  • Specify the items to be given as awards.
  • Estimate the number of each needed per year.
  • Get an estimate of the cost of each item to be used as an award.
  • Calculate any related costs such as importation, shipping, storage, breakage, or distribution.
Hints and suggestions
 

If you are giving awards or certificates to graduates of your classes or program, you can estimate completion rates at between 60 and 80 percent.
