Criteria for selecting literacy personnel

 

Introduction
 

The criteria listed here are generally suitable for selecting literacy personnel in most literacy programs. The list needs to be tailored, however, to fit the style and needs of each program.

Overview
 

In general, select people to be literacy personnel who

 
  • are approved by respected members of the community
  • are recognized as honest by the community
  • are respected throughout the community
  • speak, read, and write the language(s) of instruction fluently and accurately
  • understand and are committed to the purpose and goals of the literacy program
  • understand and participate in the local culture, and
  • work well with others.
