Criteria for selecting teachers

Introduction

In addition to general criteria listed in Criteria for selecting literacy personnel, there are specific criteria that may be considered for selecting literacy teachers. The list is intended to provide ideas, rather than be exhaustive. All criteria should reflect local needs, resources, cultures, and decisions.

Criteria

Here are some criteria for teachers. Select teachers who meet the following:

  • Take personal responsibility for continuing to learn
  • Are creative and flexible
  • Are responsive and willing to discuss issues with learners and other literacy program personnel
  • Demonstrate aptitudes to teach and explain well
  • Demonstrate interest in and willingness to work with students
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to learners
  • Have completed an approved or accepted teacher training course
