Preparing a budget for a literacy program

As you begin to develop a literacy program plan, you should make a detailed budget of all anticipated costs.

Literacy program costs, referred to as "inputs" by many in the development world and literature, may be budgeted in terms of

• monetary values
• voluntary labor, or
• in-kind contributions of time, facilities, materials, or services.

This module gives you general suggestions to help you prepare a budget for your literacy program.

• Decide on the cost categories needed for your budget.
  • Start with the categories in your program plan.
  • Review other categories in the attached module to remind you of important items.
• Decide if you will divide your program budget into sections by time slices or phases.
• Estimate costs for all the cost categories in your budget.
• Document anticipated monetary or in-kind contributions to the project.
• Add an allowance for contingencies.
• Calculate the total amount of funding needed.
