Assignment of literacy specialists

The following excerpt from the SIL legislative manual established the personnel category of literacy specialists in SIL:

MOVED that we approve the assignment of our members to full-time literacy responsibilities provided that those responsibilities are specifically tied in, in some formal way, with linguistic and ... translation [work]. This is not to be interpreted as placing any restriction on projects undertaken in fulfillment of our agreements with governments nor on temporary service rendered to other missions (1957).
