Literacy consultants

Legislative statement

SIL field strategy has come to depend on the availability and function of technical and academic consultants. This excerpt indicates that literacy consultants are recognized as part of this group:

CORPORATION LEVEL CONSULTANTS

MOVED that the Corporation authorize the establishment of a pool system of consultants: 1. To be available at an area or international level. 2. Whose consultant assignments, as to time, place and task, are under the direction of appropriate Corporation officers or appointees. 3. Who may retain branch membership so that they can return to their branch for periods of time for village or consultation or support work. Programs will normally be negotiated at least a year in advance so that the branches involved may make suitable plans for the time allocated them by the Corporation. No assignment shall be made without the acquiescence of the member involved.

MOVED that the Corporation appoint a coordinator of the consultants available in each of the following departments: a. Linguistics. b. Translation. c. Literacy and Primary Education. d. Anthropology and Community Development. Other departments and their respective coordinators may be added at the discretion of the Board of Directors. The coordinators shall work under the general supervision of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs. 4. Each coordinator may obtain consultants through regular channels and methods by negotiation with the branches. 5. This Corporation consultant program is intended to supplement the work of new branches and to bring recent techniques to older branches, and not to replace the heart of our regular branch consultant programs. 6. The coordinator of a department shall have the responsibility, within his specialty, to collect and disseminate information on the experience of the various branches and members; to promote research, workshops and publications; to encourage graduate study; and to represent the Corporation on matters related to his specialty. 7. Until other sources of income become available, the branch placing a request must also indicate the methods of paying for travel of a consultant. Each department coordinator shall be assigned an annual budget by the Corporation for the fulfillment of the responsibilities listed in (5) above (1965).
