Alverman, Smith, and Readance 1985

Reference

Alvermann, D., I. C. Smith, and John E. Readance. 1985. "Prior knowledge activation and the comprehension of compatible and incompatible text." Reading Research Quarterly. Interest level: lay specialist.

Summary

In a study with 52 sixth-grade students, the authors found comprehension may be impeded by previous knowledge that is inaccurate and incompatible with the text presented. Such knowledge interferes with comprehension more than simply a lack of prior knowledge. Authors conclude that teachers should help students understand

  • where their own answers come from
  • whether better answers are possible, and
  • how to make use of a text in resolving conflict between prior and new information.

Authors recommend to give this question emphasis in reading methods courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
