Baron and Treiman 1980 |
| Reference | |
Baron, Jonathan, and Rebecca Treiman. 1980. "Use of orthography in reading and learning to read." In Kavanagh and Venezky 1980.
| Summary | |
|
Discusses print codes, sound codes, and meaning codes used in reading and paths that link one code to another. Concludes that "any reasonable path that has been proposed seems to be used at least in some task involving reading. In any reading task, it seems, all paths that could be used are used.... [The] parallel use of multiple paths will be the rule rather than the exception in complex tasks such as reading" (Baron 1977:175).
|
Concludes with two general working hypotheses about performance. Automatization tasks become automatic through practice. Reasonably efficient paths will have some influence on tasks as long as paths are well practiced.
