Beekman, John. 1956. "The effect of education in an Indian village." Estudios antropológicos publicados en homenaje al Doctor Manuel Gamio 261–264. Interest level: general.

Summary

Discusses the effect of education in six areas.

  • Domestic: hymn singing, reading, and prayer replace drunkenness, discord, and wife beating.
  • Economic: people have better homes and clothes, and less debt.
  • Religious: sun and moon worship ceremonies that involve heavy drinking and fighting are less common.
  • Physical: people use medicine instead of relying on witch doctors, and are in better health.
  • Educational: 400 people learned to read in their own language, and many of them are teaching others.
  • Social: suspicion and fear gave way to absence of theft and fighting, respect for the property of others, and visiting and helping neighbors.
