Summary

Gives one child's account of learning to read and write; from age five to 11 (preface).

Chronicles the development of son, Paul, as he learned to write and read at home and at school. As Paul wrote to communicate and read to explore, his reading and writing developed together. Started spelling as a system of alphabetic symbols representing speech sounds. Later moved to an awareness of morphemes, whole-word spellings, and use of conventional spelling. Details son's development with many examples and comments on relevant theoretical research.

Evaluation

Gives Western point of view. Lots of literature is available. Has cross-cultural implications. Literature must be produced quickly and available to up-and-coming literates. Start from their interests.
