Summary

Describes success of Viles Tok Ples Skuls, two year programs for children seven and eight years old. In these schools, children first learn to read and write their mother tongue before going to community school where their Grade 1 work is in Pidgin and English.

Children who attend these schools experience more success in community schools than those who had no preschool. In addition to educational benefits, there are significant social and cultural benefits. Parents are enthusiastic about the program, and hope it will help to alleviate alienation from their own culture. Those who attended community schools where all instruction was in Pidgin and English felt alienated.
