Calfee and Drum 1986

Reference

Calfee, Robert, and Priscilla Drum. 1986. "Research on teaching reading." 3rd edition. In Wittrock 1986.

Summary

Focuses on reading instruction. Has the following threefold purpose:

  • To explain the meaning of research on teaching reading, and to define reading and teaching
  • To present a framework for organizing research literature
  • To offer an account of that literature, highlighting samples from the past decade of research on various topics

Has the following goals:

  • To guide informed professionals and apprentices in the social and political context of contemporary reading research (page 804)
  • To lay a solid foundation in the curriculum of literacy
  • To examine trends in the content and methods of research on reading (page 843)

Extension of reading research to hard problems (comprehension) in difficult settings (classroom) indicates a "maturing of theory and method" as well as "promising direction in educational research." Psychologists and other specialists (linguists and anthropologists) play a major role, leading to a more coherent foundation, in reading and reading instruction.
