Callister 1986

Reference

Callister, Sandra. 1986. "Adapting the syllable method for vernacular pre-schools." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: specialist.

Evaluation

Concludes that those who teach reading with the syllable method encounter difficulty when faced with the need to produce meaningful stories that give adequate practice in reading the syllables taught. Modified the method by adding two components at Misima. Used a series of 15 small, reader booklets prior to and concurrently with the phonics program to introduce sight words. Used practice books with a variety of matching and completion exercises to reinforce and revise each new syllable. Provided children with a wealth of reading practice along with the analytic approach of phonics lessons.
