Summary

Is a handbook for cross-cultural trainers and consultants. Focuses on such issues as the cross-cultural adjustment process. Stresses that "culture shock is everywhere." Occurs each time there is a confrontation or contradiction between various values, beliefs, and assumptions. Can be subtle and unnoticed or drastic and traumatic. Is characterized by what Durkheim (French sociologist) defined as a state of anomie--"something that does not fit anymore." Approach is based on the following assumptions:

  • "There is no absolute ... everything is relative"
  • "To learn how to learn is the answer. [It is] the main objective of any intercultural training program" (page xiii)

Explores and applies the ideas of Carl Jung, Kurt Lewin, Carl Rogers, and Abraham Maslow to cross-cultural adjustments. Organizes material around a workshop model, with exercises for group participation and discussion.
