Cates, Larry E., and Ann F. Cates. 1981. "An interest-oriented literacy program for the Nii people." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: lay specialist.

Summary

Program grew out of a request by women who wanted

  • to learn to sew
  • to speak Tok Pisin
  • to study the Bible, and
  • to read and write.

Fifty-two women from three villages participated. Preparations included

  • making a list of everything students would need to know to use the sewing machines
  • deciding what they needed to learn in order to sew each item
  • drafting patterns and making copies on heavy plastic, and
  • making charts for students to follow in laying out their patterns on the fabric.

Literacy workers made a list of Scriptures about sewing, and Scriptures about the woman's role. They also prepared

  • workbook pages
  • a guide for the teacher, and
  • a hymn book in Pidgin and Nii.

Before village classes began, six days were spent training instructors. Teachers continued to go twice a week for training after village classes started. Program was stimulating to students and challenging to local leaders who helped literacy workers direct it.
