Church, Katherine [Catarina Maas de Church]. 1964. "Algunas observaciones acerca de la elaboración de cartillas en lengua jacalteca." [Some observations about the preparation of literacy primers in the Jacaltec language]. In GuatInd. Paper presented at the Fourth Interamerican Indigenous Congress in Guatemala City, May 1959.

Summary

Some 6,000 Jacaltenango's speak the Jacalteca language. They are situated in the north central sector of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Not all teaching methods are adaptable to every language. At first glance, sentence patterns in which vowel and consonant combinations occur, infrequent consonant clusters in Jacaltec give the impression of easy adaptation to the syllabic method. However, on obtaining the necessary data to produce a primer series, other factors appeared which limited the syllable method.

Describes in detail some of the problems encountered, and how language characteristics (syllable patterns, verb constructions, and sentence types) were considered in introducing the material. Concludes the best way to approach primer construction in Jacalteca is to present a brief sentence first. Substitute numerous subjects and then later divide letters and words into syllables.
