Summary

  • Teachers' thinking, planning, and decision making comprise a large part of the psychological context of teaching within which curriculum is interpreted and acted on.
  • Teachers' thought processes influence teachers' behavior.

Provides a framework

  • to organize research on teachers' thought processes
  • to summarize and comment on research, and
  • to make recommendations regarding future research on teacher thinking.

Majority of this research is relatively new (since 1976). Relates to experienced elementary school teachers and describes the complexity, demandingness, and unique humanness of teaching (page 293).
