Summary

Discusses writing awareness and explorations of children between ages three to five in a literate culture. Children learn that writing is for the purpose of communication, which motivates their desire to write. At home and at school, children are able to explore by writing where their interests take them.

Communication emerges from their writing. In the informal infant room program "where child discovery is valued and creative writing encouraged, the writing plays a significant part in early reading progress" (page 208). Children's work provides objective evidence of what they learned. They need to be surrounded by literature and literate people.
