Summary

To work effectively in literacy and education in another country, an SIL worker needs to know something about the educational philosophy of that country. Suggests a plan for gathering data relevant to understanding and describing the philosophy of education operating within a given country. Organizes questions in six categories:

  • view of man
  • historical aspects
  • cognitive world view
  • government aims
  • schools, and
  • universities.

Recommend the following good source of information: International Social Science Journal, a UNESCO publication (SIL library has only 1984: 36.1, call #301.21 I6ls, ISBN 0020-8701, "Interaction through language"). Proposes some changes in the SIL curriculum, and encourages those going on for further studies to consider taking work at foreign universities.
