Summary

Bilingual education program of Peru has been a long developmental process and continues to the present. Summarizes its development in the jungle with charts, outlines, and illustrations.

Determined goals for Peru's bilingual education schools and evaluated expectations for local children. Results indicated the need for a slower program than that of the national school--not because of IQ differences but because of language and cultural factors. Important conclusion was that these programs need special care within the national school system.

In 1978, the Minister of Education appointed a high-level commission to reestablish a central office. The plan had not yet been put into effect in 1994. Encouraging result of the pre-1972 program was the continuous academic progress of the teachers and their students who were trained during those early years.
