De Castell, Luke, and Egan 1986a

Reference

De Castell, Suzanne, Allan Luke, and Kieran Egan (editors). 1986a. "Teaching students not to read." In De Castell, Luke, and Egan 1986.

Evaluation

Studies indicate that over the past 20 years in North America, younger students in primary grades improved in their ability to master the mechanics of reading. During the same time, senior secondary students declined in their ability to read and understand difficult expository material. Emphasis is the importance of teaching comprehension in the lower grades. Outlines some of the problems and solutions.
