Dweck and Leggett 1988

Reference

Dweck, Carol S., and Ellen L. Leggett. 1988. "A social-cognitive approach to motivation and personality." Psychological Review.

Summary

Presents a research-based model that accounts for previously described patterns of adaptive and maladaptive behavior: "mastery-oriented patterns" and "helpless patterns" in terms of underlying psychological processes. Specifies how individuals implicitly theorize, orienting themselves toward particular goals which set up different response patterns. Proceeds with the following activities:

  • Shows how cognitive, affective, and behavioral features of adaptive and maladaptive patterns follow different goals.
  • Examines the generality of the model and using it to illuminate a wide variety of phenomena.
  • Places the model in its broadest context and examining its implications for understanding motivation and personality processes and general outline.

Examines the relation of their model to other current formulations and developed implications of their approach for other contemporary issues in motivation and personality. The central aspect of their model is "its depiction of the manner in which underlying personality variables can translate into dynamic motivational processes to produce major patterns of cognition, affect, and behavior" (page 271). Claims existing work supports their model and suggests its usefulness for connecting existing lines of research with the generation of new ones.
