Embrey, Virginia. 1969. "Literacy among the Zapotecs of the Isthmus." Notes on Literacy. (Republished in NOLSA 1979.)

"There was a high percentage of illiteracy in the Isthmus [southern Mexico] when I arrived there 20 years ago. The situation has actually changed very little in the past 19 years. There are more and bigger government schools now, and probably a greater percentage of children attend now than did then, but we estimate that probably only 20 percent of the population is literate. The sad situation still persists of children from monolingual homes spending three years in the first grade trying to learn enough Spanish so they could read all the Spanish syllables correctly as his is the test for passing the first grade" (page 18).
