Summary

People basically learn

  • to read by reading
  • to use knowledge of the world to predict information, and
  • to organize data into meaningful units.

Lists problems of teaching literacy to adults of preliterate societies. People see no need to read and see no benefits of literacy. They have no time to learn to read, and are not used to focusing on things as small as print. Keep the following things in mind:

  • Keep relationships simple.
  • Use material that makes sense.
  • Make lessons interesting and keep them relevant.
  • Do not worry about mistakes if words still make sense.
  • Have the people read the words.
  • Use pictures that provide clues to the context.
