Evans, Peter. 1987. "Reading as a natural process." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature.

Summary

Thesis of article is that "people can learn to read in as natural a way as they learn to talk. This, then, determines the way we help people to learn to read. A child has an innate ability to learn to talk. We do not teach children to talk; they learn by listening to others and then by experimenting. For example, a child may say, 'Me see orsy.' The wise adult will respond, 'I see a horse. Yes, that is right. It is a horse.' In this way the child experiments with language and the adult reinforces correct responses or gives the correct response. But we do not teach children to talk, we reinforce or encourage them in their natural attempts" (page 24).
