Fader 1983

Reference

Fader, Daniel. 1983. "Literacy and family." In Bailey, R. and Fosheim 1983. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Says that writing should sound like an extension of the spoken voice, with polishing. States a difference between children of the 1950s and the 1980s is that they no longer come from a family that models functions of literacy and provides reinforcement for the individual voice (page 241).

Children need parents who read to them, and they also need to see their parents reading for their own adult interests and uses. Taught English from seventh grade through graduate level and advocates peer grouping in groups of three for developing writing. Provides each student with

  • audience
  • feedback
  • encouragement, and
  • suggestions.

Through the process, the group must assume some responsibility for the product of each member. Prefers to have classes with no more than 12 groups of three.
