Abstract

Takes pains to locate studies dealing with majority, well-established, new writing systems or of clear, minority power status. Contrasts successes and failures in planning writing systems (de novo or revisions of prior systems) with successes and failures in planning other aspects of language.

Seeks studies with sociopolitical circumstances as the predominant forces influencing the acceptance or rejection of writing system innovations and alterations. Seeks studies with factors that appear secondary to the technical competence or intracorpus concerns of writing system planners and their immediate associates (pages xx-xxi.).
