Gardner, L. 1984

Summary

Claims to have a "naturalistic" approach as opposed to "manipulative." Seeks to understand the reading process and comprehension by analyzing miscues during oral reading, and categorizes miscues as graphophonic, semantic, or syntactic.

Looks at miscues using an analytic taxonomy for research, Reading Miscue Inventory, as a practical tool. Goodman emphasizes comprehension over pronunciation, and a whole-to-part teaching progression. Gardner comments favorably on Goodman's book.
