Reference

Goodman, Kenneth S., Yetta Goodman, and Barbara Flores. 1979a. "Reading in a bilingual, biliterate curriculum." In Goodman, K., Goodman, Y., and Flores 1979.

Summary

"Literacy can only be relevant and functional in the context of a relevant and functional curriculum." Advocates natural acquisition of literacy by building on what students know:

  • Their culture
  • Language interests
  • Common experiences

Literacy is not an isolated set of skills. Classroom programs must have form with

  • function
  • relevance, and
  • focus on understanding.

Teachers should

  • adapt curriculum to students
  • plan for their active involvement in learning, and
  • fill the classroom with relevant reading material; posters, newspapers, and magazines.

Teachers should read to students and encourage them to raise questions about their learning in relation to their concerns and interests.

Evaluation

Gives clear presentation but is mostly philosophy with a little methodology.
