Summary

Emilia Ferreiro, who studied with Piaget, proposed papers documenting "research on the psychogenesis of the interpretation systems children build in order to understand the alphabetic representation of language." These papers are the six chapters of the book. Findings are from researchers who worked with young children in

  • Brazil
  • Spain
  • Italy, and
  • Israel .

Ferreiro discusses three levels found in children's writing:

  • Syllabic
  • Syllabic-alphabetic
  • Alphabetic stages

Stages appear predictable in children from literate societies, and give pedagogical implications. Urges educators to see children as interacting with text, constructing their own systems of interpretation rather than being passive recipients.
