Goody 1977

Evaluation

Is cited by Walter Ong. Discusses at great length traditional dichotomies; savage versus nonsavage. Defends literacy as the turning point, leading to

  • domestication
  • logic, and
  • critical thinking.

Basically gives an evolutionist's perspective--"we" are further along on the continuum than "they" are. Gives profuse apologies for "the way it sounds." Does not mean Western versus non-Western. Mostly disclaims what he "doesn't mean to say." Is very difficult to read. Has long, wordy sentences and it is virtually impossible to find the point. Some people disagree with perspectives.
