Hansford, Gillian F. 1991. "Will Kofi understand the white woman's dictionary? Some ways to make a bilingual dictionary more usable to a new literate." Notes on Linguistics. Interest level: lay specialist.

Summary

In newly literate societies, a bilingual dictionary is very valuable since it standardizes spelling and encourages new readers and writers. However, a dictionary must be carefully laid out with the new literate in mind to make it useful. Carefully consider

  • alphabetization
  • method of handling prefixes
  • word exclusion
  • grammatical categories and tone, and
  • glosses.

These aspects of a dictionary must be available to create a user-friendly resource.
