Reference

Hekman, Donald. 1987. "Literacy development: A debate between B. Burnaby and L. Drapeau." Notes on Literacy. Interest level: lay specialist.

Summary

Reviews articles by Burnaby and Drapeau that debate mother tongue literacy.

Burnaby states that mother tongue literacy advocates must take into account the role of dominant language literacy in the society. They must not attempt to duplicate that role in the mother tongue. Argues there is no need to standardize the orthography, but should adjust expectation to the interests and needs of the society.

Drapeau emphasizes the need to standardize the orthography and to elaborate on written forms of the language. This is so the writing will support amerindianization of the schools.
