Jennings, James. 1985. "Writing for adult new literates." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: general.

Believes that writing for adult new literates is much more difficult than writing for the general public. Must write about subjects in a manner that is interesting to mature adults. Must also write at a level that is easily readable. Gleans information from a number of sources. Lists the following suggestions to write stories for the adult new reader:

• Use short, simple sentences.
• Use short paragraphs.
• Use direct style.
• Follow a writing outline.
• Use short, common words.
• Repeat the same words frequently.
• Introduce new words gradually.
• Adopt a standard vocabulary of the most common words in the language.
