Discusses the January 1977 council of 25 men and women who met in Simoes Lopez, Mato Grosso, Brazil to define the orthography of one of Brazil's Indian languages. Council members were from two geographical areas. Included

  • a teaching assistant
  • church and political leaders, and
  • several students.
 

Present as technical advisors were linguists and educators from the

 
  • National Museum in Rio De Janeiro
  • National Indian Foundation in Brasilia, and
  • Summer Institute of Linguistics.
