Summary
 

Dissertation is based on author's work in literacy and bilingual education with the Kaingang group in Brazil. Evaluates the reading material and teaching approach designed largely by local "experts." Conclusions are that mimicry until students initiate independence, and meaningful contexts that combine top-down and bottom-up schema are effective among these people.
