| Summary | |
|
Can trace SIL's involvement in the field of bilingual education to its founder, Cameron Townsend. He recognized the mother tongue as the best medium for beginning education with children and adults. Under his leadership, SIL participated in the Mexican government bilingual education program for Indian groups that was established in the 1940s. Working with the National Indian Institute, SIL provided materials for schools and training for the teachers. | |
