Includes nontechnical essays that assume the correctness of Krashen's theoretical work in language acquisition. Explores extensions and applications of the theory. Is divided into three parts.

 

Part 1 is second language teaching. Deals with

 
  • materials development
  • core and supplementary activities in language teaching, and
  • teacher preparation.
 

Part 2 addresses immersion and bilingual education.

 

Part 3 is devoted to the development of literacy in the primary language. Examines

 
  • the results of studies of reading exposure
  • reading for pleasure, and
  • genuine interest.
 

Discusses current reading theory. Begins with Sustained Silent Reading and comments on the work of Frank Smith and Kenneth Goodman.

 

In final chapter, deals with writing, spelling, research on phonics and the work of Chall, the failure of "phonics-only" programs, and teaching grammar.
