Larsen, A. 1990

Reference

Larsen, Alice. 1990. "The matter of learning styles—too crucial to be put off any longer." Notes on Literacy.

Summary

Believes that "experience is the best teacher." Through an experience with Sabaot primers, the author learned about different learning styles. Made literacy material in Sabaot in good Gudschinsky style. Added comprehension drills and began with a series of global lessons. Prepared stacks of supplementary material in the form of

  • experience charts
  • alphabet cards
  • letter cards, and
  • different games.

Included games like

  • shape-in-the-box
  • jigsaw
  • domino
  • lotto, and
  • flash cards (see Mugele 1975).

Primer content was cultural, locally-authored stories. Kept all the rules about how many new characters and sight words to introduce per lesson, and how often a built word should reappear in later lessons.
