Machin 1981

Reference

Machin, Jo. 1981. "What about visual esthetics?" Notes on Literacy. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Gives good explanation of how to ascertain the visual abilities and subsequent needs of a language group. Begins with questions language workers should ask about the history of the people's art. Also suggests language workers should discern their own attitudes toward art.

Gives helpful illustrations of major points. Discusses the importance of being visually appropriate. Puts a lot of emphasis on visuals in secular advertising for messages that are significantly less important than the message brought. Discusses the importance of evaluating and separating personal artistic values from the people you work with.

Evaluation

Is must reading for anyone going to work with a language group in which they plan to do language or literacy work. Is very clearly written and supported with data. Is probably the best argument

  • for the need to evaluate art
  • of what to look for, and
  • why people need to be culturally aware of the differences in art.
