Reference

Marlett, Stephen A. 1980. "Phonology, orthography, and diacritics." Notes on Linguistics. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

One small part of the task of creating an orthography is choosing symbols to represent the words of the language. Various factors have an influence on process. One is the sound system itself, a factor that needs to be considered very seriously. This means that a serious amount of study of the complete phonology of a language needs to be completed before the orthography is cast.
